Multi-Screen Controller vs. HDMI Splitter: Which Do You Actually Need?
2026-09-05
Multi-screen controller vs. HDMI splitter: they look similar — one source, several screens — but they solve different problems.
An HDMI splitter takes one HDMI signal and sends identical copies to multiple displays. Every screen shows exactly the same picture. That is useful for retail signage, lobbies or any place where every display must mirror the same content.
A multi-screen controller, by contrast, takes one ultra-high-resolution input — for example a single DP 1.2 / HDMI 2.0 source — and stretches it across 4 to 9 screens to form one continuous canvas. Each screen shows a different portion of the same desktop or image. With the M-series controllers, layouts range from ultra-wide 1×N rows to 2×2, 2×3 and 3×3 video walls.
So which do you need?
Use a splitter when: every display shows identical content; there is no need to span a single image across displays; the source resolution matches what each display accepts.
Use a multi-screen controller when: you need one ultra-wide desktop or one large image split across several screens; you need flexible layouts (1×2, 1×3, 1×4, 2×2, 2×3, 3×3); you want to drive 4 to 9 screens from a single input without a PC or operating system in the middle.
A common mistake is buying a splitter for a video-wall job. The splitter only duplicates — it cannot divide a canvas. The result is the same picture repeated on every screen, not a wall.
For an actual video wall, a controller (or a video wall processor for multiple independent sources) is the correct device.
VEXWALL M-series controllers (M104, M106, M09) accept one ultra-HD input and output 4, 6 or 9 HDMI signals with selectable layouts — pure hardware, no operating system, reliable for 24/7 operation.
